1990년대 말레이시아는 학사학위를 수여하는 대학수가 7개 밖에 없어서, 대학 진학을 못한 학생들이 해외 유학을 떠나게 되었고, 유학비 송금으로 인한 외화 유출로 외환보유고에 막대한 지장을 초래한 일이 있었습니다.
이에 정부는 말레이시아 사립대학이 외국대학을 분교형식(Twinning)으로 불러들이는 것을 장려했고 이들 트위닝 대학들에게 여러 특혜를 보장하여 시스템의 정착을 도모했습니다.
이제 트위닝 과정을 실시한지 30여 년이 되어가며 자리를 잡았고, 이런 교육시스템 덕분에 말레이시아는 동남아에서 유일한 교육의 중심지(Education Hub)가 되었고, 지금은 약60개국, 36,000명의 학생들이 유학 와 있습니다.
트위닝은 Twin 이라는 말과 같이 궁극적으로는 말레이시아에서 수업을 듣고 졸업을 하더라도 연계된 해외 대학의 졸업장을 받을 수 있는 것을 의미합니다.
기본적으로는 연계된 해외 대학과 커리큘럼을 100% 동일하게 맞추고, 교재도 같은 것을 사용하며, 가장 중요한 평가 시험인 기말고사는 해외 대학에서 출제하여 말레이시아에서 시험을 치루고, 이를 다시 본교로 보내 본교 교수가 본교학생들과 비교해서 학점을 주도록 되어 있습니다.
이렇게 커리큘럼이 100% 같은 이유로, 말레이시아 3년+ 해외대학 0년 졸업장 취득과 같은 과정이 1+2, 2+1, 1.5+1.5 의 과정으로 변형이 가능하고, 해외 대학에서는 매년 1~2회 감사가 나와서 말레이시아 대학이 제대로 진행 하고 있는지를 평가하게 됩니다.
또한 연계된 대학 이외에 해외 대학으로 편입학을 하는 Credit Transfer 과정도 있는데 말레이시아 대학들은 각각 미국/캐나다/영국/호주 대학들과 다양한 연계를 맺고 1년 혹은 2년 동안 얻어진 학점을 가지고 해외 대학으로 편입학을 할 수 있는 이런 프로그램들이 활성화 되어 있습니다. 여기서 가장 중요한 점은 학점의 관리입니다.
특히 한국 학생들의 경우 대학에 들어가기는 쉽지만 영어 실력의 부족으로 학점을 제대로 받지 못하거나 시험에서 좋지 못한 성적을 받는다면 원하는 대학의 졸업장을 얻지 못할 수도 있음을 유념해야 합니다.
일반적으로 말레이시아 대학과의 연계 프로그램은 미국은 학교에 따라 100~300개, 캐나다는 약 30여개, 호주는 전공에 따라 10여개 내외, 영국 역시 10여개 이상인데, Credit Transfer를 통해 해외대학과 협정을 맺은 대학 중에는 세계랭킹 300위 이내의 좋은 대학들이 많아서 연계가 없다고 하더라도 학점만 좋으면 편입학이 가능할 수 있습니다.
말레이시아 트위닝 프로그램은 검정고시 합격증만 있으면 입학이 가능하며 굳이 높은 점수의 검정고시 성적이 없어도 입학 가능합니다. 하지만 일반적으로는 80점 이상의 검정고시 성적을 받기를 권장하고 있습니다. 고등학교 성적 역시 일반적으로 내신 70점대 6등급~7등급 정도면 프로그램을 시작할 수 있습니다.
근래에 들어서는 예전 2000년대 초반에 비해 말레이시아 트위닝 프로그램을 많이 이용하지 않고 있습니다. 그 이유는 트위닝 프로그램의 편입률 보다 차라리 처음부터 미국 컬리지로 입학해서 편입을 하는 것이 더 보편화 되었기 때문입니다. 그리고 요즘은 사실 이런 트위닝이나 미국 컬리지를 거쳐서 편입하는 프로그램의 인기가 점점 줄고 있으며, 최근 미국유학의 트렌드는 미국 4년제 대학교를 Pathway 프로그램으로 바로 입학하던지, 아니면 미국 상위권 대학교에서 직접 제공하는 "편입 보장 프로그램" 을 이용하는 것이 훨씬 안정적이고 유리 합니다.
그럼에도 불구하고 트위닝 시스템이 여전히 유지되는 이유는
하지만 말레이시아에 와서 트위닝 시스템만 한다고 자동으로 학위를 취득하는 것이 아니고 현지 대학과 같은 수준의 시험과 조건을 넘어야 하기에 입학 후 특별한 노력이 수반되어야 함을 기억해야 합니다.
영어만 문제가 없다면 성적은 일반적으로 관대한 편입니다.
계약을 맺은 대학으로의 편입은 일정 수준의 성적 예를 들어 미국대학의 경우는 평점4.0만점에서 2.0 이상이면 자동 편입됩니다.
영연방 국가(영국/호주/캐나다/뉴질랜드 등)의 대학은 학점이 ‘A’,‘B’,‘C’로 되어 있는 데 전과목이 ‘C’학점 이상이면 자동 편입됩니다.
또한 계약되지 않은 학교로 편입하려고 할 때는, 앞서 언급한 Credit Transfer를 통해 편입할 수 있으며 트위닝 시스템 진행 과정에서 성적이 나쁠 경우는 과목을 재수강하여 성적을 올릴 수 있습니다.
